Union Minister for Civil Aviation, Shri Jyotiraditya Scindia, affirmed the significance of the Navi Mumbai International Airport (NMIA) as more than just an infrastructure project for Mumbai or Maharashtra; it stands as a project of pride for the entire nation. During his visit to Navi Mumbai, Shri Scindia provided a comprehensive overview of the airport’s development, highlighting its transformative impact on connectivity and progress.
The ambitious project, valued at eighteen thousand crores, is poised to elevate Mumbai’s connectivity significantly. Implemented in five phases, the NMIA has achieved a commendable 55-60% progress, both physically and financially, since its commencement in 2018. The commercial operationalization of the airport is scheduled to commence by March 31, 2025.
In the initial phases, one runway, one terminal, and a passenger capacity of two crore will be established. Subsequent phases will witness the addition of a second runway, four terminals, and an increased passenger capacity of nine crore. Shri Scindia emphasized the airport’s alignment with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision under the Gati Shakti Yojana, ensuring multimodal connectivity through road, rail, and metro, with future plans for water connectivity.
NMIA will be linked to major roads such as NH 4B, Sion Panvel Highway, and Atal Setu, connected by the Targhar Railway station and multiple metro lines. Future endeavors include hovercraft connectivity from Colaba and cargo connectivity from Raigad in Phase 2.
An innovative aspect of NMIA is its distinction as the first airport in the country with automated passenger movement within its expansive 1600 hectares, spanning ten kilometers on the city and airside. The commitment to sustainability is evident in the creation of a hundred percent green airport in the first phase.
Shri Scindia highlighted the anticipated surge in air traffic, contributing to the government’s goal of doubling domestic passenger traffic from 15 crore to 30 crores by 2030. The ambitious plan also includes the creation of over 200 airports across the country in the next six years.
Expressing gratitude, Shri Scindia thanked the State Government and CIDCO for their commitment to ensuring the timely completion of the project.
